I rewatched the episode since my wife didn't get to see it last night. It looked like the raft was completely engulfed by the white light, while the chopper which was higher was only blinded by it but you could still see the occupants. The chopper was outside the bubble, the raft was in.

It's like putting batteries in the fridge so they last longer. They lose their charge slower when cold, but the power output is never the same.

The freighter moved and was as close to the island as it could get. Sawyer probably had a longer swim than Jin would have since the boat was behind the chopper when Hurley spotted it. Daniels boat was probably pretty close at the time of the explosion, so it's possible.
