God, I'm so happy to see this here. This went round my uni about a year ago but I would have thought it was too nichey to go any further (too nichey for AV Club… I don't know what I was thinking)
The whole series (there's one about skaters, scene kids, nu-ravers etc) is just a brilliantly precise time capsule of what

I've only seen it because it's on Film4 a lot :D Agree regarding Remember the Night, though, one of the great Christmas films. She makes such a contrast with Stanwyck's inhuman ice queen of a mother - the scene where she basically rejects her is chilling, breaks my heart.

Prefer Tokyo Story, but this is still a decent melodrama thanks to the performances - Moore and Bondi, of course, but also one of my all-time favourite character actors, Thomas Mitchell, as the most repentant of the ingrate offspring. Worth noting that it's not all gloom, though - one of the best scenes is Moore's

She's utterly deranged in the Shepherd of the Hills, a very peculiar early colour John Wayne western-cum-melodrama. She plays his loony aunt, very Queen of the Damned. A great actress. Saw It's A Wonderful Life again at the cinema last night, one of the 4 times she played Jimmy Stewart's mother. By the end it must

Agreed. Apparently he had a hard time adjusting to post-war life and fitting back into his image, hence the transformation which began with It's A Wonderful Life. Although he played a couple of shady types at the very outset of his career - he was the villain in After The Thin Man in (I think) '36 - I don't think it

The (excellent) inclusion of Fonda reminded me that it would have been nice to see Fonda's best friend James Stewart on the list. After 15 years of playing stammery All-American nice guys, the Tom Hanks of the classic era switched it up dramatically in the years after the war, particularly in his 5 bleak and brutal

She reminded me of Lucille Ball so much during that bit.

Personally I'd holding out for Rough Riders. Tom Beringer is phenomenal as Teddy Roosevelt, making him as absurd, unnervingly tic-ridden, and borderline-ADD as he reportedly was in real life. Like Teddy himself, he makes absolutely no concessions to reality. Plus Gary Busey co-stars as an equally bonkers army general,

Amen. And seeing as here in the UK Thanksgiving doesn't exist, it feels like TV has just randomly disappeared for the last two weeks. We're all wandering round campus in a wide-eyed trance wondering where TV went.

Modern Family but no The Middle? This sucks! This is total BS! <—- this grievance was brought to you by Bulldog from Frasier.

Another thing: Eddie said he had a wife and two sons, but where did he say they were? It sounded like there was a 'strasse' in there, which would make it a German address. I wonder why they would still be in the old country? Or perhaps they died during the war. A guy his age would likely have sons about the right fit
