Where have I used the word 'trivial'? And the fifth, I believe, is about avoiding self-incrimination. I am not at risk of self-incrimination. I am sure I have all sorts of unconscious biases and behaviours I don't keep in check as well as I could, but I'm also absolutely, unequivocally sure that I'm not by any…
The cognitive dissonance shall flow, yea, like unto a mighty river
There are 'calls on social media' for all sorts of nonsensical bullshit -if an American cinema chain manages to convince itself that putting the words 'blacks only'
up in any cinema south of the Mason-Dixon (or
North of it for that matter) is an act of racial solidarity I will await the sacking
of its entire marketing…
Look, honestly, you're getting your knickers in a twist over a version of cultural theory that only exists in the mind of people on the internet who define themselves by hating cultural theory.
I don't know which perspective the author wants 'prioritized' or even what it would mean to 'prioritize a perspective' in the first place. I certainly can't see anything that suggests they would like anyone to conform to anything. You've clearly read this thoughtful and nuanced essay in the most reductive manner…
Define 'political'.
'Identity politics' is a bullshit boogeyman thought-stopper.
"Help! Help! I'm being oppressed!" Jesus, you people…
Yeah, it absolutely is Armond White. Says so at the bottom and everything.
This is one of the best essays I've read on this site for ages. Even though it tickled my morbid curiosity into checking out that Armond White…thing.
'Authenticity' is a contested concept in itself - not that it shouldn't be discussed, just that it's not necessarily what the unified goal of all criticism should be.
Yeah, I'm more after 'you will definitely feel something other than 150 minutes closer to death after this one!'
Every review of this so far has been variations on 'If you like this sort of thing, then this is definitely the sort of thing that you'll like' as someone who's at least reached an awareness of how many seconds they have left, I'm not 100% sure that's good enough…
I do love me some Wed Anderson, but I'm not having him appropriating one of the more awesome areas of London.
Highlander 2. It was a whole bunch of us on some kind of school trip, Dances with Wolves was sold out and somehow we thought this would be at least entertaining.
Absolutely! And by contrast, I'm really enjoying Itrubi's ongoing demonstration of how you can be absolutely right and a total dick about it (and how Janus sort of enjoys that arrogance despite himself).
Yeah, that was bewildering. 21 episodes of assiduously 'realistic' tech and we suddenly get some sort of…disintegrator? One that Holden somehow instinctively knows how to use?
Yeah, I'm adding to the chorus of bewilderment around this review.
It has to be said, though, hat some of that cast (Posey and in particular Reynolds) manage to elevate the film a bit by walking a delightfully fine line between doing the jobs they're given and gently mocking the shitpile of a film they're in.
