@avclub-97b2d5e5f92c333976018236d76658d9:disqus Yeah, the pre-Tap songs don’t get nearly enough love, despite being every bit as pitch-perfect as the onstage stuff. ‘Listen to the Flower People’ is genius – the fake posh accents, the bored hand-jiving studio girls, the getting-it-nearly-right mainstream TV psychedelia…

I think it’s a measure of Tarantino’s massive arrogance that he thinks his films – particularly lately – are sufficiently culturally essential survive being placed in the middle of this sort of semiotic minefield. While I’m sure that this silly little shooting film will in itself be extremely enjoyable, entertaining

‘Myra was a very complex woman. And this song is about…her hair.’

In the credit sequence to 'The Equestrian Vortex' itself the soundtrack is credited to 'Hymenoptera' - which is EXACTLY what the sort of band who would do that sort of thing back in the day might have been called (I can just imagine the Wire magazine retrospective article about the two albums they released prior to

Surely Donald Pleasance’s snivelling, sweaty coward in ‘Escape from New York’ should come in for an ancillary mention. ‘God save me!’

No, he's an Aussie, isn't he?

The London Review of Books has a fine essay from Andrew O’Hagan about how far back this thing goes, with some interesting sociological observations, here:

Why? There has always been an element of the grandiose about the Bond franchise – it isn’t Bourne, and was never meant to be. And ‘silly’ isn’t necessarily ‘cheesy’. You could argue that the recent Batman film was about as ‘big and silly’ as it gets.

It would be perfectly possible to do a big, crazy, high camp plot

There have been intermittent references to the wife he lost in OHMSS in later films. Dalton, IIRC, visits her grave in one of them, Brosnan says he was 'married, once…'

The last five minutes are a work of beautiful genius. The camera pulls away from the coat rack, ‘Eve Moneypenny’ reveals herself mid-flirt and, like an optical illusion resolving itself, you realise you’re at the beginning of every Bond film ever. Reboot over, press Ctrl-Alt-Delete to start up…

Well, he said what he said, but Granta seems to me exactly the sort of thing Malcom would a) hate more than anything as a symbol of wishy-washy, bien-pensant Notting Hill liberalism, so to him it would be an insult and b) imagine that someone as ineffectual as Nicola Murray would end up doing some sort of writing gig

The column, I thought, was going to be in ‘Granta’. Which makes slightly more sense. Regardless of how far she’s fallen, I can’t quite see an ex political leader writing for a fashion magazine.

Yeah, the chorus of 'Sing me Spanish Techno' was the point at which I went from 'this is really, really, good' to 'Is there some sort of official body I can complain to about this band not being more famous?'
