The trouble with Neil Stephenson is that so much of what he writes – particularly when he or his obvious proxy characters are having opinions about politics, economics and culture – occupies with almost unnerving precision the gap between how clever he actually is (which is, to be fair, pretty clever) and how clever

Archer was different – unlike Trump he wasn’t openly and obviously preposterous, particularly not at the time he got lorded. It was only later that the extent of the lying was revealed, and it’s only fairly recently that the sad extent to which he’d ultimately bought into his own bullshit has beome clear.

I've got the same goodwill towards this show that anyone else has - it remains an extraordinary gift that those of us who grew up with the original never thought we'd see in our lifetimes, run by bold (if flawed) pioneers who have finally bothered to learn some lessons from the US serialised TV renaissance. But, but,

I don;t think it would even make sense with him as an anti-hero. He is, and was meant to be, simply an unbearably nasty piece of work who no sane person could sympathise with - the gag, as I mentioned above being that he was also everything the people who complained about Action Comics' content said they wanted ('I am

This is, for sure, one of those 'ssshhh…don't ask about the political economy' moments. Unless it really was a fun, non-exploitative thing to do you wouldn't choose to be a Dabo girl - so either it is, or this is another one of those awkward situations where the Federation sits around all post-scarcity and shit,

To be fair in terms of point 1, Dredd was pretty flexible in terms of how ‘futuristic’ it wanted to be, if I recall. The mad, apocalyptic wasteland of the Cursed Earth was walled off to most people, 98% of the population weren’t necessarily mutants or cultists or what have you, and while there were aliens, psychics

When I first saw films advertised in ‘4D’ I was briefly excited, wondering if we’d see people reeling out of cinemas with bleeding eyes and ruined minds, possibly being pursued relentlessly by the Hounds of Tindalos.

Turns out it was just ‘smell’. Pah.
