I've sometimes thought the waterbed was that that last bubble between those alternate universes, and it ended up nearly screwing everything up. Doesn't explain poor Pam though. Maybe she's a former alien abductee, those people are always train wrecks.

Not an opera fan but the Tolkien fan in me was fascinated. Really, really liked the beginning of  Die Walkure with poor old Siegmund and Siegliende. I don't know much about opera but I know I like Jonas Kauffman. You can't help but cheer them on despite the incest.

I was held hostage by Criminal Minds the other night. Tricia Helfer as a sexy villainess holding people in a bank hostage, although she at least she was a better actor than the other bland interchangeable cop/FBI/whatever types, running around with their Frowny Faces and their dull little personal dramas. We saw this movie with my parents in a little theater in Georgetown. During the gristle gun scene, my mother whispered, "I know it's wrong, but this is making me hungry."

Agree, that was distracting and surprising. The 60s-era old age makeup from 2001 was better.

The surviving Engineer is an awesome being of godlike intelligence, but when push comes to shove his best plan is to simply rip off heads with his bare hands.

For the Fellowship of the Rings, I was quite honest about why I was using my vacation time. I scheduled the afternoon off, no secret at all. My boss raised an eyebrow, but it was my time.

Goodness, has anyone mentioned Apollo yet? This is where I post my thesis comparing and contrasting Jack, Apollo, and Bullock: The Hero As Attractive But Difficult Self-Righteous Prick.

But I think that's the point of her character - she is a victim of pretty vicious emotional abuse as a child, made to constantly feel worthless. I too am a big fan of the BBC adaptation. Really brought her to life.

I too like Jack. He was damaged, and he could be a difficult, self-righteous prick, but I think that was the point. He felt like a real person.

In terms of retro gender relations, I recently watched some old eps of The Flintstones on Boomerang with my kids and found the Mad Men-era gender stuff much ickier than Lucy ever was. Wilma and Betty can't balance their checkbooks, so they hypnotize their husbands to buy fur coats, and on and on. I think I prefer

Fight Club is the only X-Files episode I actively hate. It may be unfair, but I blame Kathy Griffin for Fight Club. I blame Kathy Griffin for everything, really.
