I agree, they succeed with varying success. I would think that the hope is the licenser would have enough respect/props for the artist that they would "do the right thing" and use the remake.

They're called mechanical rights. Lynne may have written his songs - so he owns his writers royalty - and, like many artists, he may publish his own songs (famously the Beatles, like many young artists, to this day, did not publish their own songs, Dick James owned the publishing), but he does not own the master

ELO tracks are licensed so frequently I'm sure this will add to his bank account, and I'm in favor
