Sgt Bilko was a straight ahead throwback comedy, and on those terms is was very good. Most people rejected it because they were probably expecting some kind of post-modern or ironic take on old comedies. That's one key thing to Martin's career: he rarely does what one might think is "expected" of him, and he is can be

"The screams were incredible…"

My Blue Heaven isn't great, but it's perfectly fine. I believe Steve Martin is intentionally going over the top, I think that was kind of the point. And Moranis is a great straight man.

"What does 'FOC' mean?"
"It's a slang expression, when a man loves a woman, a man puts his-"
"No,no. The letters F-O-C."

That was a religious question. The philosophical question was, "is it OK to yell 'MOVIE!!' in a crowded firehouse?"

He tried doing stand-up, but eventually settled into doing improv and characters with The Groundlings.

And remember, a day without sunshine is like, you know, night.

"Dancing in the Dark," which was reran the day Gilda died and Steve was hosting (I think they showed it on the 40th Anniversary Show too). I still get a little choked up every time I see it (the same way "Love is a Dream" does.)

Did someone mentionThe Absent Minded Waiter? An amusing filmed short that was a modest precursor of his film career.

"When are you having your fingers removed from your face?"

The Socrates one was always one of my favorites. I like how it is nicely staged like a pretentious PBS stage drama.

I hear you out there saying "Steve…" which is a funny thing to say to yourself, "Steve, how can you be so fuckin' funny?"

"You up for a little NAFTA?"

Taking their word for it (i.e. that the script started out good), I would imagine the big problem was that it was just flat out unfilmable.

And that's a shame, because one cannot say they've truly lived until they've seen The Cod Roe Battle.

Gilbert Gottfried should just deliver every eulogy from now on.

It could be sponsored by the numbers 6 & 9, but that was more a Sesame Street thing.

Please, no need to revisit that failed Presidency.

Upvoted just for mentioning Fred Clark. Kudos, sir.

Not while Sam Elliot is still alive, damnit.
