Yeah, I agree. I think this is the direction they were going in all along.
It's especially clear when we see him in Mystery Spot—he's so powerful in that episode.

Trickster episodes never disappoint and this one might have beat out Mystery Spot on my list of all time favorite Supernatural episodes.
