Maybe because he is a gifted impressionist and that's about it. When he's not hiding behind a character he has a cloying anti-charisma, that and the fact that he is just about the worst stand up comedian I have ever seen.

Another thing that makes that scene so excruciating is that Lindsay is largely responsible for Nick's humiliation. It was a running theme right from the first episode when Eli breaks his arm that Lindsay's impulses to stand up for underdogs always had unintended consequences.
