I made the mistake of reading the book first. They did more than make changes to "open it up", they completely changed the characters and plot.

The image of Joss Whedon duck walking between the rows of cartoon houses will forever be burned in my brain.

You're right. I failed to recognize the episode title. I was under the impression the episode was called "Men in Black".

I know they are not in the top 10 (or 20 for that matter), but X-cops (x-files/ cops crossover) and Men in Black (Alex Trebec episode) changed my understanding of what a TV series could be. They seemed so experimental and free compared to what was expected of X-files and TV in general.

Ishtar and Hudson Hawk were shitty comedies because they were shitty comedies. Ishtar had actors that can't really "do" comedy in that style. Hudson Hawk was a tonal mess amongst its other crimes (mainly relying on Bruce Willis' "charm").

I think the problem is the disconnect between the characters/plot and the comedy. Apatow movies (and others) seem to stop whatever the characters are doing and feeling just to have a funny moment where they do something absurd or surreal. It always feels like the movie grinds to a halt to wedge in a gag (usually where

I completely agree. Modern comedies have funny moments, but are generally not very good movies.

Umm…. how is this an "exclusive to The A.V. Club" when it is posted on Youtube?
