I would add AJ Soprano to the list.  Not only did the show not need him, but they put him in a character arc in the last season that Robert Iler could not pull off.

I read a couple of novels about Batman, and one written by Andrew Vaasch involving a pedophilia ring was very good.
I enjoy comics and the heroes and stories therein. I enjoyed reading Watchmen and still do. But this novel does not sound very good to me, and I am going to pass.

I am thinking Batman Year One as a start, and there is a lot of good stuff in the Legends of the Dark Knight series.  The Killing Joke is excellent as is Long Halloween.  For a couple of oddball riffs you may want to take in Gotham by Gaslight and Digital Justice.
