The Ninth Gate suffers from a monotone storyline, and the lack of Polanki's directorial personality.  To me it feels phoned in, Depp included. 
But that said it is not a bad film, just, umm, bland.

Chinatown, then Rosemary's Baby, then Macbeth is a good place to start, I think.  But stay away from his home movies.  Yikes.
