I spent the whole movie trying to put together what Kid Blue's relevance was. I figured he had some connection to Jeff Daniel's character Abe, but they never alluded to anything more than employer/employee.  And at the very end, his big contribution to the film was accidentally letting older Joe get away.

Barney did in one minute what Ted has taken 7 seasons to do so far.  Congrats Barney, he should have been the one telling Ted's kids how Ted met their mother (hopefully Barney's sister).
