I love the Archdeacon's character, his first scene projects his whole back story, as someone who secretly despises the enforcer he has become while embracing its necessity, with such marvelous economy.

I agree that working with God in fiction can work well, even the Deus Ex Machina has its value, but I am less trustful of working without doubt.

I think the Simpsons do all right with God as a character (though that might qualify in your not grounded category), but otherwise it is very difficult to do.

It seems to me that they do a really good job overall, but I also tend to be forgiving since while I know a lot of clergy they're mostly Roman Catholic and nearly all in the Southern United States, where many of the basic problems of the profession are very different.
