"It's the coming-back-from-the-dead & being-the-son-of-God part that's mythical."
Why do many folks hold on to a literal interpretation of Genesis? Because as one famous creationist of yore said something like, "If I can't trust the bible in matters of creation, then how can I trust it in matters of salvation?"
Yeah, fuck those assholes.
WTF?
I don't understand the assholes who come on the AV Club and say "Who the fuck is this?" Why would you do that? It's not "punk" to piss off punk rock people by waving your ignorance around; it's just fucking stupid and lame. Are you even on the internet? Google the motherfucking dude & his band, it takes 0.05…
Sounds like pops and buzzes from here.
I will…
…brook no dissent on the greatness of:
Taxi Driver
Jaws
the Ramones
Joe Strummer
Sinatra
Elvis
19th cent Russian lit
The Sopranos
The Office US (as in, "I like the UK version better")
Indeed. Over the years I've come to love Bogie more and more, and consider him alone to be the single eternal icon of the movies. And the AFI agrees!
Oh yeah, just remembered, in the movie version of Rabbit, Run, he's played by James Caan—that's right, Sonny Corleone.
Ha, Tony Soprano… love it.
Psycho meets Silence of the Lambs?
First time I saw Beautiful Girls, when Timothy Hutton hanging out with Portman, I yelled, "Dude, go for it!" at the TV. I mean, she was awesome.
JAWS, unguiltiest pleasure ever indeed.
The world really needs a Carl Sagan these days, alas.
"Horror movies scarier"? Really? Ever watched, say, Texas Chainsaw Massacre or Henry Portrait of a Serial Killer or Silence of the Lambs or Zodiac or even an old Dracula movie alone at home at 3 a.m.? *That's* scary. Watching it in the movie theater, man, people just laugh at that shit and yell "Don't go down to the…
AFAIC, none of those movies is the director in question's greatest work, although they're usually recognized as such. I myself prefer A Clockwork Orange, Jaws (natch), The Long Goodbye, and Taxi Driver. And I think Raging Bull gets so much love b/c it's generally known Scorsese almost killed himself trying to make it.…
I think DOOM had some of the best & most intense action set pieces in the whole Indy series. The CGI in KINGDOM was incredibly off-putting. I just wanted stunt people to do crazy shit in realistic settings, like the truck chase in RAIDERS, or the fist fight with the German mechanic. But the kids, they're jaded. They…
I went back and watched the Indy trilogy right after KINGDOM and honestly? Despite my (nostalgic) love for DOOM, and the banter between Ford and Connery in CRUSADE, none of them even come close to the sheer bad-assery of RAIDERS. All the sequels were unnecessary.
Twisted Sister did "We're not gonna take it," but point taken. Metallica '83-'86 were AWESOME.
I won't criticize Zep, but I will only say I don't get them either; for pure fucking rock, gimme AC/DC. Mostly Bon Scott years. Altho' when I told one Zep fan this, he had a nice response: "Wow, I envy you! You have so much to look forward to when you get around to 'em." So there's that.
JAWS. Spielberg to his dying day will never make a better movie than JAWS. But, you know, I'm biased.
