I would say that it's not so much about morality as it is about the insanity that is inherent in genius. TMP takes the idea of the mad scientist and really focuses on the madness.

Doing secret histories that involve recycling old SF tropes, often with a postmodern sensibility, is nothing new (Warren Ellis has been to that well several times, I think), and Hickman doesn't bring anything really special to his version, except to fastidiously remove anything and everything really
