I totally agree with you!  Though even then, I think some Conservatives would answer in the affirmative if asked directly… the issue I believe becomes agreeing on what a "minimum standard of living" is and implementing it.

I understand your and others points about Mal not being a Saint, but I think it is unfair to peg him as not a good person because he's got issues.  It's almost kind of the point of the Joker in Batman (particularly  Nolan's) everyone has a breaking point.  But does succumbing to emotional responses now and then…
