Coyne does discuss the genetic evidence throughout the book, especially in the chapter about vestigial organs and bad design. He ties it in by pointing out that we still have the genes for traits that our ancestors had, and they can get turned on again by accident or in the lab to express those traits. Not much

I thought that Sheldon's peculiarly subdued way of saying "Take it. Take it." was pure genius. It's like he knows that borrowing money is a somewhat shameful thing to have to do. And he knows that by offering money he is putting himself in a heightened friend-relationship to Penny. There was something ineffably

"It's just Cirroc, your honor, and thank you. Ladies and gentlemen of the jury, I'm just a caveman. I fell on some ice and later got thawed out by some of your scientists. Your world frightens and confuses me."

Updike has been doing absolutely amazing work in the New Yorker for the past several years. Every time I read one of his book reviews or culture pieces, I was taken aback; he had such a strong, clear voice that he used with simultaneous grace and authority. The writing was always vital; there was nothing "in

This is actually helpful. I'm clipping and saving. Thanks, Kid.

From this write-up, I can guarantee that I will absolutely love PASSING STRANGE. Do we have to shell out for HBO now?

I have a not-so-secret love for OLD CHRISTINE. At its best, it may be the most consistently masterful of the traditional sitcoms. There, feel free to use that as an excuse for never coming back to the blog.

It was really a B-, but I'm a big softie tonight.

Sitting through PAPER HEARTS was totally worth it so that paragraph could come into the world.

Brunch! Brunch! Brunch! Brunch!
Or at least some different movies from Noel!

Events be transpirin'!
Based on the Twitter feed, I thought this day was worse than what it looks like all put together in this post. Aside from THE KILLING ROOM, everything else sounds like it at least has some interest, and sometimes a lot — or even a revelation.

Neither — it's actually the badge of a British archery society. I borrowed the name of my blog from the society's motto.

What a start!
From past recaps of this and other fests, it seems to be unusual to find more than one movie a day that's intriguing and unusual, let alone successful. This post records what by those standards is an extraordinary day at the movies, even if there weren't any out-and-out masterpieces. I hope the next

Can I take this opportunity to say how much I hate the "song of the city" montages? It just galls me to think that they *tell* all these people to sing this song, meaning that the audition we see is not the real audition — there's this producer saying "come back in and sing Bon Jovi before you go." Fakey fake fake.

Yes, I believe BIG LOVE will be covered.

Jay, they're working on getting the alt-text (which we are inputting, but is not showing up) to be the same as the "title" (which is what you see when you mouse over). For the record, the alt-text of the picture on this post was "Misters Clean and Belvedere."

Saw the trailer this week, finally (too late for me to contribute to this piece). But if I had seen it earlier, you all would have been treated to a paragraph on how highly I am anticipating it. All kinds of awesome.

The same Noel Murray that, y'know, is one of the three people who writes the Comic Panel reviews every couple of weeks? That one?
