I always thought the point of the warped "memories" in the first episode was a). gently making fun of how kids' memories tend to distort things, and b)., poking at the kinds of fans who would be all, "Brent Musberger? But IN CANON it was Patrick Duffy!" In short, basically the opposite of what SIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIMS…
