Except that's not part of the world of Atlas Shrugged at all. Probably half of Rand's villains are executives in charge of major corporations, who work hand-in-glove with the government to have their businesses protected from competition and fair dealing. A lot of her followers have forgotten this point, but that

"Pro-capitalist book disagrees with my anti-capitalist ideas about the essential nature of the free market. HAHAHAHAHAHAHA!"

@avclub-0ae7484a9f3bbd2a21df420050c032ae:disqus  Even all this "these Objectivists aren't heeding the infallible judgment of the market, har!" japing doesn't make sense. If Howard Roark had that attitude, The Fountainhead would have been about 100 pages long (cue sarcastic approval from commentariat).

@avclub-74f7a71ee2b66500bff752ae84ce358d:disqus Then I rescind my ass-pulling remark. :-)  And you're right, Atlas is definitely often mentioned in that crowd. One notable example, Steve Wozniak has said that Steve Jobs read it and was heavily influenced by it. I've heard stories that Jobs was at the opening night

Where are there rape fantasies in Atlas Shrugged? Or does rough sex fit the bill when penned by a female author, now?

As an actual "Randinista" I'd be pretty shocked to discover that the current crop of the world's elite running large corporations (constantly begging for government favors) and central banks (whose very existence Ayn Rand opposed) consider Ayn Rand their chief inspiration.

If AV Club is going to be saturated with Rand snark, it could at least be coherent Rand snark. You know, the kind the indicates the barest minimum of familiarity with what Rand actually wrote.

I'd nominate Ghostbusters. It's about some professors turning their backs on academia to launch a successful business, and an EPA official is cast as the chief protagonist. "The franchise rights alone will make us rich beyond our wildest dreams!"

Yeah, surveying all of Gotham through people's cell phones is definitely plank one in the libertarian platform. As is the whole "noble lie" element, and the sympathy for expansive government powers as embodied in the Dent Act. All very libertarian stuff.

A bit of interesting contrast between Walt and Hank. When Hank had a trophy reminder of someone he killed (Tuco's grill in lucite), it disturbed him so much he wound up throwing it away. Walt's book from Gale, on the other hand, seems to have given him so much solace that he kept it and is now revealed to Hank as
