SO GOOD. I wouldn't have minded at all if the Pogues did poppy stuff like that.
Glad to see White City getting some love.
So, is there any band that does this kind of thing better than The Pogues? Or as good? Or almost as good. I used to be constantly on the look out, but I've stopped looking.
Both The Snake and Crock of Gold are really good. I think i might like Crock of Gold a more, though. it's got Mother Mo Chroi, Paddy Rolling Stone, More Pricks Than Kicks, St John of Gods. A lot of stuff that aren't gems but are still good fun: Back in the County Hell, Come to the Bower, Skipping Rhymes.
Aside from alcoholism, I think Shane has some general mental problems as well. it's been a decade since I've read his biography, but I definitely remember some dysfunction. The line about getting ECT in "Dark Streets of London" is true and that seems to be as much of a cause of problems as it is an indicator of…
I love that line, because…it kind of makes no sense. Like, it make sense, but I think you have to meet it more than halfway.
I haven't heard much of Waiting for Herb, but "Tuesday Morning" and "Smell of petroleum" are great songs. I might have to check it out.
I know it as a bonus track from the enhanced version of "Red Roses for Me," but yeah, it's an ass kicker.
It's like the scene from The Simpsons where the turtle gets a hold of Grandpa's teeth.
He was a miserable bollocks and a bitch's bastard's whore!
South Australia is a song where I see the title and I immediately begin shouting it in my head.
Yay, Ceilidh Cowboy! I really enjoy that weird country phase Shane went through. Though, "Truck Drivin' Man" has some…weird racial stuff that I'm not sure how to interpret…
I'm glad someone else shares my love for "Bottle of Smoke." I feel like it's an under-rated Pogues song. It's not poetry, it doesn't have the emotion that some of their best have, but it's a great rocker and it's got a ton of great lines and awesome imagery in it.
"Navigator" is a great song. I always sing it to myself when I shovel snow.
Shane MacGowan solo/with the Popes
"Haunted" is probably the best because it's such a great song.
God damn this is so hard.
There are two people I'm constantly afraid I'll wake up and see they died: Shane MacGowan and Tom Waits.
WHAT HAPPENED TO THE CHUCKLES?
