Yeah back in the 80s and early 90s we were really funny about violence in films and tv. I guess it's part of not having written down free speech laws but calls for censorship by tabloids and politicians are very common. Ban this sick filth and so forth.

Aside from the usual American suspects I'd say Utopia is definitely up there at the moment. The first episode is one of the boldest episodes of television I have ever seen.
Ping Pong The Animation was pretty great if you're looking for an anime pick.
Don't worry, they'll casually write it off an in a mixed review of the David Fincher remake in two years or so.
It's actually a good show, the first season is a bit patchy but it gets pretty good considering it's tiny budget. There is also a proper ending and stuff. Don't watch it on SyFy though because they'll butcher the swearing and nudity.
Take out the teen part and you're pretty much describing half the AV Club

It would have been alright if the actions scenes weren't so incomprehensible, the opening scene and the opera house scene in particular were awfully edited.

I have faith in Blick, The Shadow Line was a bit shaky in the first episode but brilliant for the most part.
