I was amazed that they were allowed to do that.  I thought it worked fine in-story, but it definitely seems like it would've been awkward.

Minor point, but each title has its own rules.  The standard template (as with the Earldom of Grantham) is male-line succession, but there are more than a few titles  that allow women to inherit due to the specifics of the particular grant.  The Earls Nelson, for instance, are now descended from Admiral Nelson's

I've been really surprised at how the show has consistently avoided bringing in actual historical figures for cameos.

I saw Before Sunset in theatres when it came out, and as it ended I remarked "now we'll have to wait ten years for the next one", to general amusement in the theatre.  I was only off by one year, it seems.
