This was a good episode, though in retrospect Hoynes' rapid departure is pretty obvious stage-managing for the season finale.

Excellent stuff.  Should definitely be in contention for the editing Oscar, especially, because the tension of the movie is all in the editing.

I'm always hopeful that she'll eventually appear in one of his movies, since he's really good at making them, but for now she's said she doesn't want to mix her personal life with work like that.

I agree on that.  This is probably in great part because of the hair colour, but the most obvious real-world equivalent for Rayna that comes to my mind is Reba McEntire.  Or, given her suggested peak period, maybe Shania Twain.

That certainly introduced a heck of a lot of characters in fairly short order, and reasonably effectively (though, particularly with the many supporting male characters with scruffy faces, I'm not totally clear on names). I thought this episode clicked much better than the first two, overall, particularly in terms of giving definition to the supporting characters — though the resolution to Mindy's plot was pretty formulaic, and didn't really have much weight.
