That's definitely my opinion.  It feels like a great small story about a bunch of kids trying to make a movie, that for some reason has aliens in it.

I don't see too great a resemblance based on this.  Walt was a reclusive bigot; this guy looks more of a standard curmudgeon.  And his kid isn't a materialistic asshole.
