It's not a cheery album, the death of a close friend of the band's probably had an effect on the tone.  Alex is doing some sort of Stuart Copeland thing most of the album and there's no epic riff to be found (which might have been by deisgn, I don't know).  Power Windows was similar.

2112 the song is a lift of the the Ayn Rand book "Anthem" and there's a song on "Fly by Night" called Anthem. I'd say his philosophy changed just a few years later on Hemispheres (we need to be logical AND fun).
