I am so like Scott when it comes to discovering my favorites…
They always have to grow on me, because it often turns out there was some hard-to-swallow aspect that I grew to find endearing. By contrast, the entertainment I love immediately ends up feeling disposable in the long run.

I'd say it leans more toward tragic, as the protagonist foolishly chased his dreams and, as punishment, must live in them forever.

At his best I could compare Tim Burton's ability to blur the line between heroes and villains to Gilliam's ability to blur the line between imagination and reality. BEETLEJUICE comes to mind when saying that.
