It was mostly shot in New Mexico & Ridley was quoted(LA times interview) as saying he picked Modesto because it would be unfamiliar to most viewers. As lazy in his research—missed opportunities—as the stereotypical Latino portrayals.

Impressively fair, enjoyable, well-written & non self indulgent yet personally flavored review. Would love to read this reviewer's takes on Broad City, Man Seeks Woman, Being Mary Jane, Revenge, or anything really.
The dialogue between Kirk Acevdo & his lost love was so lame & cliched that only Kirk Acevdo could have pulled it off. Really took me out of the story to have worldweary 2043 characters reprising lines from 1980 B movies.
It's a brilliant comedy with fantastic visuals & a potentially epic ensemble. One of the few that doesn't scream "shot in LA on a soundstage" & shows some knowledge of a distinctive regional culture, coffeecake hospitality and all. Main flaw so far is not enough Kal Penn & Janet McTeer, but worth watching for what…
It's the show I'd rather watch.
This writer set back Joan's detective skills to listener/echoer who needed everything pointed out to her by Sherlock—-without even any interesting mistakes. No explanation as to why she lost all the skills, spunk, and fresh perspective she brought as Sherlock's student and as his partner.
