It's not super technical or creative but I always loved Phil Manzanera's solo in "Jealous Guy."

The singer of fun. has the most punchable face I have ever seen. I have seen some real punchable ones, but good lord this guy really takes the cake.

I agree so much about the lyrics aspect. That's why the music did matter and was frankly better than music today. A lot of those bands were at least trying to say something, even if it didn't always come out coherently.

Grunge was like anti-cool to me. Looking like you just got out of bed was the only fashion to speak of, and most of those people really did just get out of bed. It's admirable in a way.
