I would be willing to join.

2013 was like this, too, although there were far fewer acclaimed new comedies.

It also sounds like a movie that will probably need multiple viewings to truly appreciate, which sounds about right for a latter-day PT Anderson film. Oh, and no critic can seem to explain the plot.

An improvement over last week. There were quite a few moments that I enjoyed.

:)

Will Jake Peavy be this postseason's Barry Zito?

Maybe it's just me, but for me, your TV writing job sounds like a sweet gig, jmunney.

Yeah, of the two movies of his I have seen (DVSL and Deep Blue Sea), I enjoyed each of them. I just wish they were more easily available (for instance, I had to drive five miles just to rent a VHS of DVSL from a library. I have not used a VCR in five years before that).

Top ten first-viewings from September:
1. Crumb (1994)
2. Love Streams (1984)
3. Life Aquatic with Steve Zissou (2004)
4. Distant Voices, Still Lives (1988)
5. Certified Copy (2010)
6. Band of Outsiders (1964)
7. Being John Malkovich (1999)
8. Summer with Monika (1953)
9. Brazil (1985)
10. The Royal Tenenbaums (2001)

I've also noticed an increase in "Yeah, we know what we're doing is stupid but, whatever, we're doing it anyway, fuck you" meta-jokes. The Simpsons may have been mediocre these last few years, but you never get the sense that their writers have stopped trying.

Family Guy, a show that has pretty much just given up and started
rubbing our noses in the inexplicable fact that it still exists and is
reasonably popular.

Oh, and Paul Konerko retired! Baseball was not fun for me today.

Harry Shearer, meanwhile, seems to have boycotted this episode. They used Dr. Nick instead of Dr. Hibbert, and that character has been dead for seven years.

Congrats to Lloyd on winning the CZ fantasy baseball league! I hope to enact revenge upon him next season, but since participation after the draft was low, I doubt there will be another league to do it in.

Nice.

Was that a Don Hertzfeldt couch gag on The Simpsons?

If we ever decided to bring back Tinychat discussions of blacksploitation films, may I suggest we start with Darktown Strutters?

Pro wrestling fans: can you actually recall a moment in which Jim Ross actually said "My God! That's ___ music!" It is a quote I see many people associate with him, yet in my years as a WWE fan I could never recall him actually saying it.

Our offensive players seem to have just given up across MLB this past fortnight. Meanwhile, pitching has been terrific. Both of us have at least a 0.8 ERA fewer than in the semi-finals.
