I was in the marketed age group when they first came out, and I'm pretty sure they were normal size Barbie dolls, but maybe they diversified later on and had gumball size ones. Reading the wikipedia page, I see the main line spun  into Itsy Bitsy Bratz, which is probably gumball size.
