I will add that the homoerotic subtext of Melville's Billy Budd isn't all that "faint." That story is out of the closet gay (in a good way, since it is an American masterpiece and homosexuality is totally cool).

I approve of this. I really enjoyed Iron Man 3 and I freakin' love Kiss Kiss Bang Bang. Doc Savage is the kind of badass action hero that could use the Shane Black treatment. I just hope they keep the early 20th century setting.
I know what you're saying is right, but the capitalization somehow has me thinking that this comment is dripping in sarcasm.
The problem with putting people who are wracked by alcoholism on television, is that the fact they're on television will prevent them from actually truly following through on treatment. As other psychiatrists have noted, the expectation of the reality television format is that you watch individuals who live…
The Kardashians get all of the celebrity reality hate, but for my money Dr. Drew is the most rage inducing of all reality TV stars.
The guy on the left is totally like "Hey, I'm pointing. Watch where I point. I might be pointing at you!"
Now I want a sequel following the suits around on their Jamaican vacation! It would be like Marvel's version of the Hangover.
Hey, I'm from Ohio, and I can assure you that you can take a wonderful, relaxing, even life changing road trip through our fine state.
The death of Lupaza and Furel in "The Darkness and the Light" always bothered me. First, they were fun characters that could be used in other situations. Second, it felt like the stakes weren't high enough to kill them off. Maybe this was the point, but it felt like a waste nonetheless. Both characters deserved a…
I was talking to a friend of mine many years ago about this exact song. And the question came up, if Clapton's son is in fact in Heaven right now, do you think he is mortified that his dad wrote such a shitty song about his death?
I completely agree. Unbreakable is M. Night's best film. Hell, I even liked Signs. I still have no clue what happened to that guy. He came out with three unique films of good quality and then completely blew it from then on out. I'll defend his early work to this day. What a complete waste of talent.
GBV fans tend to dismiss the cleaner sound of the aughts as inauthentic. This is probably unfair, since a band has to evolve over its lifetime. Still, i do think that the albums from the classic line up just happened to come up with better songs. My favorite GBV album is probably Under the Bushes, Under the Stars,…
This year I decided to buy at least one Pollard related album per month. There's something about his songs that makes them both catchy and growers. Part of it has to do with the lo fi aspect. The songs reveal themselves over time. I think this is why I haven't grown tired of Robert Pollard's output after all these…
What bothers me the most about Palmer's internet solutionism is that she seems to suggest that there's a once size fits all quick fix to every artist's problem. Sure, if you have a decent sized internet following like Palmer, then you can get people to give you money online. You might even convince a gullible few to…
This show is like The Thing. You chop off one appendage and it just grows back.
Here's my theory as to why Pete has a progressive streak now and then. I think it goes back to his aristocratic upbringing. He still has a sense of noblesse oblige, which means he still has some duty for the "less fortunate." His interest in the plight of others probably carries with it some condescension. Still,…
Do you think people would hate Zack Braff half as much if his last name weren't "Braff"?
The script was a little funny, if only because it looked like it was written on the fly and in a moment of rage. But the filmed version shows too much effort for too little return, which is likely to be the case with Zack Braff's movie.
I say keep the once a week review for future House of Cards seasons. I timed my viewing with these reviews in part because the show didn't necessarily make me want to watch it all in one sitting and in part because the reviews themselves were enjoyable companion pieces that mirrored some of my own critiques. This…
THX shows off Lucas's pissed off side. Despite all of the florescent looking lighting, it's an incredibly bleak movie. It feels like it was made by an angry teenage (and I mean that as a compliment). There's also a surprising amount of dark humor in the film. Despite the sci-fi trappings, it is a long way from…
