I didn't want to mention that in the preview but one of the best parts of the pilot is when it's off-handedly mentioned that EVERYONE IS AN ORPHAN. That's why this pilot needed the civilian friend to say something like "Yeah, there's a group of them, they all have a parent who died." Or, maybe it could have been

The heartening thing about the Faye thing is that Williamson & co. have a decent track record with Somerhalder and others on TVD of letting the wild characters actually be wild, or at least unpredictable. The weird dock lights "badassery" is not the norm on TVD, so hopefully it won't be here either.
