It's pitched as being somewhat of a comedy, but half at the expense of the followers and half at Ghandi for acting silly.  As you get closer to the reveal, it deliberately goes out of its way to paint the followers as sympathetic characters and Ghandi as genuinely wanting to help them.  It really tries to paint itself…
