I am really hoping Life magazine plays less of a role in the movie than it does in the trailer.  But since they've always been known for their photos, and since photos of exotic places and thrilling adventure seem to be what sparks this particular Mitty, I fear I may be disappointed.

That's one of the few "stunt casting"/gimmick moments of the early seasons that I still really enjoy.  Friends isn't exactly a realistic show, but even by its flexible standards, Lovitz' loser blind date was practically a cartoon.  But he was awesome.  He ties with Phoebe's "universe wants us to meet" date for my

You know, I hadn't thought about it before, but I agree, the Chandler characterization is both very Gen-X'y and not very Gen-X'y at all.  On the one hand, he's a neurotic guy who hates his boring button-down corporate job.  On the other hand, he's not really artistic or inspired, and his neuroses aren't (usally)

There's also that whole episode about how half of the Friends make noticeably more than the other half.

I am the one who predicts a lot of "I am the one" jokes in this thread.  Also I knock.

Ha!  I was just about to type that, as much as I loved this show, I'd completely forgotten about Michel's existence.  He's so forgettable I've been forgetting to make that comment for weeks now!

I get this damn song stuck in my head at least twice a month.  I had almost forgotten which sketch it was in (though ofc I remembered it was Python).  The minute I started reading about "Archaeology" I was like..  "Oooooh!  TOOOOODAAAAY…."

Seriously.  I want an Inventory of Authorial Hubris, where the focus groups and the market testing and the studio notes actually IMPROVED the movie, because the original filmmaker's idea turned out to be total shit.

I agree.  It is facsinating how these sorts of pieces act as though studios are on some kind of ego trip, when really the issue is "You're asking us for $200 million that we may never get back.  Um, why should we do that?"  Yes, merchandizing and pandering to foreign markets are Evil, fine.  But how the hell else do I

Seriously, I couldn't take the article seriously after that.  No vital movies SINCE THE LATE 70's??!?  It's absurdly overstated.

Seriously, I'm glad to see this in the comments.  Even if that story hasn't been documented, it's strange to leave it out altogether, especially if you're going to say that Woody and Diane are "essentially Alvy Singer and Annie Hall" in this movie.  Well, yes, that would make sense if the whole story had originally

Yeah, I watched it when I was 8 or 9 or so, and without any real awareness of its history.  It was just a show on at 4 that I liked.  And I loved it — it cracked me up.  I remember being particularly excited when it was one of the "California" episodes.

I'm sorry, I'm going to lose an hour of productive workday to laughing at the imaginary episode "Ethel is Sterile."  (For me, it's funnier without the French)  Granted, it's essentially a Family Guy gag (look, this thing you remember, but with a horribly crass modern twist!) but damn it's cracking me up.

Also odd — both she and her brother, George Martin, went on to become authors.  Freaky.

Never saw it.  I do remember how popular it was, though.  This was probably the first "art film" I was aware of.  That is to say, this is the first time I became aware that some schools of criticism liked to distinguish between the commonplace, mainstream entertainment kind of movies and those movies that tried to do

Strangely enough, the most popular restaurant in town?  Friday's.  Huh.

That's offensive.  Don't go around calling people Canadian.  Jesus, we're living in a society!

Coincidence?  That someone would have thought a Batman/Superman movie might happen?

They probably put some kinda clause in the contract that said they didn't have to pay him anything or something.  It's a really sneaky thing to do, a very..  I don't know… UNETHICAL BUSINESS PRACTICE!

I think has magnum opus is Hannah and Her Sisters. Not slight at all, IMO, and not as prone to "overstatement" (ahem) as Crimes and Misdemeanors.  A fantastic film.
