It's funny. I seemed to pick up quite a bit of music this year, but a surprisingly small amount stuck with me. I like Coexist quite a bit, but still probably prefer their first one. A lot of the albums that are making all the lists are ones that I liked but didn't really love. The one I wish more people mentioned was

That sounds pretty great. While I like the new album, my favourite bits of his are the really stripped down ones.

Mine would go something like:
1. Japandroids - Celebration Rock
2. Richard Hawley - Standing at the Sky's Edge
3. Swans - The Seer
4. How to Dress Well - Total Loss
5. Metz - Metz
6. Sharon Van Etten - Tramp
7. Polica - Give You the Ghost
8. Godspeed! You Black Emperor - Allelujah! Don't Bend! Ascend!
9. Django Django - Django

Yeah, that's great. Now I'm imagining how amazing it would be to go to, I don't know, a Fucked Up show or something, and there's George Wendt just standing there beside you, bobbing his head.

Somebody on these boards recommended the Allah-Las, so I checked them out, and I am very grateful to that random internet person.

Nice review, although I would have never linked Bolano and Junot Diaz. 2666 was okay, but the Savage Detectives is my favourite by Bolano. Epic is the best word to describe him. Not sure I'll check this one out. As much as I like his writing, I have little desire to delve into his b-sides and rarities.

I finally finished reading Gravity's Rainbow. I liked it, but it was a bit of an effort to finish. I started reading Leacock's Arcadian Adventures with the Idle Rich. It's goddamn hilarious, and a nice easy read after Pynchon.

Ha, small world etc. I'm friends with some of the media studies people. Flats can be a bit tricky to find here but it's possible to find a one-bedroom for about €600. Most people I know live elsewhere and commute though, with the Hague being popular. All the best with your start in Feb!

Replying here so you see this. Cool! Congrats on the PhD! I got a job as a research fellow in public administration here. Erasmus is a pretty strong university and getting better every year. The campus is a bit shit though (although I can't say for the medical site).
Rotterdam is one of the more affordable Dutch

Yes, I'm in Rotterdam! I started working at the university here in September. I like it as a city. It sort of gets a bad rap, but I think it's a fun place to live. There's a lively nightlife and good museums, and nice places to live as well. So are you moving here in February, or staying in Utrecht? Let me know if you
