That's easy to say, but I think that a good, if not great, director can capture a performance in a way that some hack cannot.
I'd say Pink Floyd's Live at Pompeii also does what D'Angelo lauds Stop Making Sense for doing, with the caveat that there *were* no concertgoers to observe PF's performance in that film (4-5 kids who were allowed into the amphitheater excepted)
