It was always go over to a friend's house, have our Moms buy pizza, watch the entire TGIF block, then PlayStation. So pretty much the same as my current Friday nights.

The "Girl with the Dragon Tattoo"-style text seemed bandwagon-y and really distracting, but I remained cautiously optimistic. Then the 'off the chain' thing kinda killed it.

I'd say it probably has to do with the proliferation of cable. In the 80s not many people had cable, so shows on the Big 4 could appeal to a larger audience by playing to the whole family.
