I liked Sixteen Stone when it came out and was aware at the time of the Nirvana comparisons but didn't hear anything beyond superficial similarities, intentional or not. Then again, Oasis was also popular around that time and I never understood the comparisons to the Beatles beyond what sounded like a poor Lennon

I think it's that he tries so hard to be liked. Every entertainer craves this to some degree, but they're better at concealing it. Hardwick doesn't make it any easier for himself when he isn't liked - as in the linked review - by wanting partial credit.
