All in the Family
To me, what makes AITF seem dated today is not the jokes or the references, but the incredibly weird way in which it was filmed. Watching that show today it seems like 80% of the dialogue is delivered by characters shot in close-up, which is a) extremely unnerving and b) completely at odds with the

Yeah, there's always the potential that stuff people do could've been weak - I mean, Biggie and 2Pac's closest living analogues are probably Nas and Jay-Z, and so they could still be releasing a steady stream of albums that get so-so reviews and are negatively compared to their early work, or they could be

Also, I should mention that the second I heard Hartman died I called my friend and told him, and without even knowing how Hartman had died, he immediately responded "They killed Troy McClure?!?"

Seconded on Blind Melon. Soup was a huge step forward and was hella underrated. One more album or so and they could've definitively shaken the Bee Girl/hippie tag and been known as a really innovative rock band, almost like a proto-MMJ but better.

Cobain would pretty much occupy the exact same kind of place in pop culture as someone like Michael Stipe - exemplar of good taste, generally respected by everyone, beloved by people of a certain age, barely on the radar of Pitchfork types.

I'm gonna throw this out there.

Biggie and 2Pac
I've said this on here before, but I would love to hear those guys at 40. And yes, I know they've both released tons of posthumous shit, but you know what I mean. I mean, think of the insight and maturity Pac possessed at 24; hearing him now would be unreal.

It's funny that everyone always talks up the "emotional resonance" of the UK version, because while yes, it was better at conveying that sort of existential dread of cubicle work, the US version (circa Seasons 2-3TM) was a lot more emotionally resonant for me (think "Booze Cruise," "Casino Night," "The Convention,"

@Miller

Yeah, but the "appeal" (such as it is) of both those shows really has nothing to do with music. Glee is a teen soap opera that happens to contain music (which, notably, is never just music, but is always part of a routine), while American Idol is basically sports.

Here's my theory which no one will want to read all of
First I do need to give some context: I'm 25, but my tastes have always skewed a little older, so my nexus point for music is typically 80s and 90s indie/alt stuff (i.e., my favorite two records so far this year have been the new R.E.M. and the new Beastie Boys.)

"You know what they call a diner in Weirdville? They call it a Weird. You know what they call food in Weirdville, they call it food. (Sounds good.)"

Pretty sure the Kenneth tag at the end was a reference to early in the first season when Jack said in five years they'd all be working for Kenneth, or dead by his hand.

I frankly don't know why it took so long for this comment to be posted. AV Club commenters must be falling off.
