I really don't see how Sam can be considered the lead character. Even in the pilot, where Bartlet wasn't really supposed to be a character, they spend more time on Josh than Sam. You know what my favorite of that whole thing was? Every single time Leo said "old sport" it sounded ridiculous and affected and fake (intentionally, I think) and Joel Edgerton's Tom says it once, kinda mockingly, and it sounds totally normal coming out of his mouth. Just a nice little detail.
