I think it being rushed is sort of what does it for me, it comes off as a "QUICK EVERYONE FIND A HAPPY ENDING" so its really sweet both in the show and in life

Rewatching this show every so often is why I perpetually have "Eternal Flame" in my head and I'm not sure if I am grateful or mad at the show for that.

Have you ever seen Little Black Book? It definitely counts as a rom-com but it's also a bit of a takedown/smart subversion of the genre and also has Holly Hunter chewing scenery like a pro. I kind of love it.

I was guilty of that but I think it has to do with Paul Rudd and Elizabeth Banks being in the cast and looking exactly the same

Mileage may vary but I think Showalter and Wain rely too heavily on thinking that shining a light on a trope is in itself funny enough and that movie is the two of them indulging each other at their worst without another voice in the writing

Yeah I'm not trying to be down on the show at all because I used to watch it so much I eventually just started watching it with the commentaries repeatedly (which were great) because I had worn out the sketches so much.

I think you're safe, the show is a little different than the movie comedically but I enjoyed it a lot.

Have you seen They Came Together? It's horrible and is my big fear with the Baxter.

I haven't seen the Baxter because I've been afraid that I'll hate it. So much of Showalter's writing is "it's like X for people that don't like X" and then he forgets to put jokes in so it's all pastiche.

I don't disagree but, and I love the show dearly, I would have a hard time giving you a second sketch I felt that way about.

It is one of my favorite things that I am most afraid to show new people though. It's weird-funny, and if you watch it with someone who isn't enjoying it suddenly you notice how few actual jokes are in it
