She didn't pretend it was a spontaneous journey of self-discovery. though. On page 35 she states that she manages to pay off her divorce settlement and legal bills and now "can actually afford to do this because of a staggering personal miracle: in advance, my publisher has purchased the book I shall write about my

I really enjoyed the book. Elizabeth Gilbert is a fantastic writer and I feel criticism of her as self-indulgent is misplaced. Think about it: if you are a writer by profession, which Gilbert is - she had written a novel, short stories (I think) and many articles for reputable magazines before this memoir - the way

The really funny thing in this disagreement is how everyone is embarrassed to admit that they care about the other AVC commenters' opinions of their own comments. You obviously care if you are engaging in the discussion! Own it.

I think collecting pictures of cherubs is just as creepy as kiddie porn.

All the acting in that is so good. I agree that Paul Schneider was awesome in it. And so was everyone else in the movie!

It IS better to brush your teeth in the shower than in the sink, though.

I really don't understand why people hate Nora Ephron so much. I too have read more of her stuff in print than seen movies she's written, but I really think that a lot of the reason you guys on here all hate her so much is because her movies are about subject matters you (you being AVC readers) are not particularly

When did she sleep with Ken? I don't remember that.

I was talking with someone about this who kept going on about the night to day thing, which didn't bother me at all. But I did notice it, and the cut from Don taking Anna into the bedroom to coming out, and the smash cut for comedic value to the movie theater, which Mad Men almost never does.

After I realized what was happening with the flowers I thought that the scene was definitely about the flowers, not brushing off Peggy (though of course it seemed to everyone, incl. Peggy, that that was the case). That was an incredibly funny scene.

I was really disoriented because somehow I thought that in Don's apartment, the windows were to the right as you are facing the couch with the kitchen behind it, so it seemed to me like there couldn't be a room to the right of the kitchen because the building ends there. I had thought the kids' room was to the left

I thought I definitely heard her gag like she was about to throw up (not because of force feeding but because she actually hated sweet potatoes - that totally happens to kids) as demonstrated by her saying "I'm sorry." But it also could have been on purpose to some degree.

I thought it was interesting how the way Matt Weiner was talking, he basically made it sound like we ONLY see Betty during her bad parenting moments and never her good moments of which there are assuredly many! Of course, bucolic family scenes aren't always the best television. Yet I think Todd is right when he says

Haven't read the books yet but I thought the element of self-projection in the books was supposed to be socialist ideal-ly aspirational rather than sexually aggrandizing-ly.

Props.

The conclusion I draw from my limited sources is that it's Russell Brand who's slumming, not the other way around.

Lady Gaga is doing the girl version of what Marilyn Manson did where you do record music that's about stuff, but the more significant expression is the persona she is projecting, which is in itself a kind of performance art-y form of commentary on fame and media and iconic-ness and crowd control. Manson of course has

Shocked
Really surprised at this review, so surprised I'm moved to comment almost a month after the review was written. It seems to me that this review is actually a review of the book, and worse, of how the movie unfavorably compares to the book (despite the fact that Robinson also criticizes the book).

Me too. That really freaked me out. It's funny, that whole movie (except for a couple scenes) isn't objectively scary but it is infused with such an ominous tone that you constantly feel like something terrible is about to happen.
