I agree Bogey. I didn't get into Steinbeck, outside of Of Mice and Men (had that in Drama), until I was out of high school. Add East of Eden and The Winter of Our Discontent to that list, especially EoE.

The beauty of Freaks & Geeks though is that mostly everybody's an outsider in some way. They didn't go in for cliche'.

'A Perfect Day for Bananafish' certainly fucked with my head first time I read it. Salinger has this amazing voice that captures the awkward, longing, idealistic & apathetic feelings that can come with late adolesence. He has such an excellent sense of character.
