Being a crowd-pleasing movie that the commoners can all agree on, it's probably "cool"  for sophisticated cinephiles to hate on Shawshank now.

Recently watched The Tall Man, as a matter of fact, based on my love of Martyrs as well as reading your praises on another thread. Much obliged for the recommendation - I thought it was quite well-done, agree with you on how good Jessica Biel is in it (seriously, y'all), and, yes, that is an impressive single take.

Exactly. I was in my early teens when American Beauty hit, and I counted it among my favorites. Now, well, it's not that I hate it; I just hold it in less esteem.
