You'd think that something like 3 Women would place on the director's list, at least. Altman pretty much just pulled that one out of his ass and made a masterwork from it.

Technically, visually, acting-wise - Private Ryan is damn near unimpeachable.

I think The Searchers could stand to get knocked down a peg or two. Ford made lots of classics. The Searchers is unquestionably one of them. But, honestly, to call it a masterpiece is to willfully ignore a good third of the movie.

I'm agreeing with your list as much as I'm disagreeing, but I most certainly tip my hat at the inclusion of The Sweet Hereafter. Definitely on my list.

I've been told that Mirror is fantastic, but a tough pill to swallow if one is new to Tarkovsky, which I am. What would be a good gateway movie, Mr. Washington?

Bel Geddes is terrific in Vertigo, and hardly ever gets her due.
