Not unlike Miami Vice, I really, really enjoy Public Enemies despite the glaring flaws. The prison break, the shootout in the woods, the shackled-Dillinger waving to his fans, any shot with Marion Cotillard - gorgeous stuff.

I was in my teens when I read it, and remember thinking the ending was ballsy and heavy. Looking back on it now, though, the book really hasn't aged well in my mind, and that ending seems all the more silly.

The movie doesn't seem to be shying away from that character trait, you're right. That's pretty loyal to the book, though, isn't it? (It's been a long time since I've read it. Patrick is explicitly described as gay but I don't remember how high the book dials it up.)
