Yeah, it's that kind of ignorant statement (plus his baffling endorsement of the complete trainwreck that is modern DC) that keeps turning me against Sava as a critic. I wanna like a guy who loves Prophet that much, but he really comes off as someone who hasn't actually read that many comics.

Of course, you can make a pretty solid argument that the real-world Manhattan Project is an example of science being put to evil use, which I'm pretty sure is part of Hickman's point.

Well, from what I remember—haven't seen it in ages—it seemed pretty straightforward to me: Mackey was either the devil or a servant of the devil, and his motivation was to sow discord and wreak havoc on people under the guise of mildness and tolerance. Snakes are equated repeatedly with the devil in this episode, so

I know that there's a tendency to fear Ferengi episodes, but "Bar Association" really is quite good—one of several episodes (which include "Past Tense" and of course "Far Beyond the Stars") that showed that DS9 had at least a vague sense of real-world socio-economic issues rather than dwelling in an ivory tower borne

Both "The Abandoned" and "Hippocratic Oath" seem like responses to "I, Borg", suggesting that there might be times when you just can't strike a deal with your enemies, or at least, that it's more complicated than sitting them down for a nice talk. Which is not to say they undermine "I, Borg"—the circumstances are

SPOILERS? NOT REALLY BUT JUST IN CASE

And yeah—given that the Vorta seem to be designed to be a bunch of back-stabbing weasels, it's a little surprising we didn't get more along the lines of "Treachery, Faith and the Great River".

SPOILERS OBVIOUSLY WHY ARE YOU READING AT THIS POINT

"Indiscretion" is clearly awkward for the writers. With Kira and Dukat, for the first time on a Trek show, we have an ongoing relationship that's defined pretty much purely by loathing and contempt. It's the kind of thing that modern TV shows trade in, but Trek can never quite let go of the idea that two people, stuck

I freaking LOVE Hippocratic Oath, an episode that more or less confirms that Trek (and maybe SF in general) is at its best when it's about moral dilemmas rather than goodies punching baddies. Every character's argument in this episode makes perfect sense; no one is wrong. Which makes the ending all the more tragic.

But by the same token, if they were freed from the drug, I can't help thinking their first act would be to take vengeance on the Dominion for abusing them all this time. And it would certainly be a strategic advantage for the Federation.

Yeah, probably the single biggest misstep in what could have been a really gripping episode, like an action-packed "Duet", but instead ends up just being OK.

From now until the end of time, all anyone ever has to do to make me laugh is use "Sir Ian, Sir Ian, Sir Ian…" in some context.

I was kind of astounded to see Return to Oz being mentioned as if it was a failed attempt to cash in on the original. RtO is an amazing movie that absolutely deserves its cult following. Other Oz follow-ups are pale shadows of that movie.

Hey, I've been mentioned obliquely in one of Zack's writeups! I can die happy now. Possibly thereby rescuing my father from being unstuck in time.
