Dee Bradley Baker chose the perfect voice for that character.  It worked well when he was talking to himself as Tarrlok in When Extremes Meet.

I really don't think airbending would have been very effective against those airships. If air slicing worked then we wouldn't have heard Aang lament about not being able to bend metal on top of the drill.
